Customs & Duties

You cannot import alcohol or pork products. Videos are scrutinized but there is no restriction on the number of cigarettes, cigars or the amount of loose tobacco.

 

Weights and Measures

The Metric system is followed.

 

Electricity

220 V AC, 50 HZ, is available, and if your gadgets are used to other specifications, carry an adaptor.

 

Post & Communications

Most hotels sell postage stamps. There are several Post Offices near and in Doha. Post Restante is not available in Qatar.

The telephone system is excellent and direct dialing overseas is very quick and easy. Phone cards are available. Qatar’s country code number is 974. There are no are area or city codes in Qatar. Fax, Telex and Telegraph facilities are available through the main telecommunication centre in Doha or through the business centre of any big hotel.

 

Tipping

A service charge is usually added to restaurant bills but it goes to the management staff and not the waiting staff, so though local custom does not require that you leave a tip after your meal, but if you do it will be greatly appreciated.

Bargaining is not common in Qatar, and you can only reduce a bit off the price of electronic goods, rental cars and hotel rooms.
