Danish Food Guide: An Introduction

By news desk on September 11,2007

image

Danish food, like that of many other northern European countries, relies heavily on meat, fish and potatoes; meals are invariably centred around these three staples, and supplemented by (usually) another vegetable. The most popular Danish delicacies include the ubiquitous smørrebrød (literally, `buttered bread’, a range of open-faced sandwiches which can be topped with virtually anything under the sun); hvid labskovs (a meat and potato stew); gravadlax (marinated fish with dill), and flœkesteg (roast pork). Weinerbrød, the rich and delicious pastry known as `Danish pastry’ abroad, is a popular dessert.

Generally, the most popular drink is beer, although the well known Danish aquavit (similar to schnapps) is a close second.
