Tampere’s people are fond of eating, as is evident in the huge number of eateries that are scattered across the city. This is one city where you’ll find the most chic specialty restaurants, standing cheek-by-jowl with affordable pizzerias, hamburger joints and kebab stalls. And, as if that isn’t enough, there are lots of outlets that serve international cuisine- everything from Chinese and Thai to Mediterranean, Indian, and Mexican. Virtually something is available to suit any budget, but if you’re specifically looking to eat cheaply, head for the many sausage stalls which sell the Tampere specialty known as mustamakkara (a black sausage), or go to a pizzeria. The Laukontori open-air market has a number of options for cheap food, but don’t expect any frills.
Tampere offers amongst the most lively entertainment in Finland; the city’s many beer gardens, wine bars, pubs and beer cellars offer music- some of them live- and Tampere’s nightclubs and discotheques remain open till the wee hours of the morning. In addition to these, the city has lots of venues where musical and theatrical performances are regularly staged. The important show venues in Tampere include the Tampereen Konservatorio, the Tampereen Filharmoninen Kuoro (both for concerts); the Tampereen Teatteri, the Teatteri Mukamas (for theatre), the Tampereen Komediateatteri (specifically for comedy theatre) and the Tampereen Musiikkiteatteri (for musicals). There are, besides these, venues where there are performances of folk music, dance and cabaret.
