Only about 4 miles from Birmingham, the gardens of Castle Bromwich Hall are good for spending at least half a day; you can easily get a bus from the city to the gardens, take a picnic lunch along, and relax for a few hours at the gardens before heading back. The gardens date back to the early 18th century, and spread over about 10 acres. They are an excellent example of the formal and elegant style of garden and landscape design which had become popular at the time, and are particularly beautiful at springtime.
A town dating back to the 13th century, Oldbury lies at a distance of about 5 miles from Birmingham. It’s at the centre of the borough of Sandwell, both geographically and from the point of view of administration; as it was the site of the borough’s council house. If you’re keen on imbibing a bit of history, Oldbury can be quite interesting- it’s got loads of atmosphere, and some of its buildings are pretty old and picturesque.
Although not quite so very far from Birmingham, there are some other places which can comprise quite rewarding day-trips from the city. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Glasshouses, and the Rock Face, the latter an indoor venue well-known among avid climbers are only about a mile or two from the city, but can keep you occupied for at least half a day.
