Getting Around The Orkney Islands

By news desk on September 18,2007

Within the Orkney Islands, flights between the islands are operated by Loganair on behalf of British Airways. There are, in addition, regular ferries that operate between the larger and more popular islands; if you want to visit some of the out-of-the-way islands, you’ll probably end up having to hire a boat.

For travel on an island, hiring a car is easily the best bet. Although there is public transport in the form of buses and the odd taxi in larger settlements, there’s little of it, and what is there, is slow and infrequent. It’s much more convenient and fast to rent a vehicle - a car or even a bicycle (if you’re up to it!) from one of the rental agencies in larger towns like Kirkwall and Stromness.
