Dare To Visit Kandhar As Vacation, Be Careful Of Taliban

By travel news on April 27,2007

image

Kandahar is a major city in the South of Afghanistan. The Taliban, former rulers of Afghanistan, had their capital in Kandahar and the population of area is mainly Pushtu speakers, the ethnic group that dominated in Taliban. There are still some strongly conservative people in the city, although exposure to foreign media is countering this among most of the population.

Kandahar Airport (IATA: KDH) now has international flights on Ariana Afghan Airlines between Kandahar, Dubai and Tehran every Wednesday as well as three domestic flights per week between Kabul and Kandahar. F

lights are also available from the UN but are only open to UN staff and other approved organisations. Pizza Hut has an outlet inside Kandahar International Airport.
Burger King has an outlet inside Kandahar Airport.
Subway has an outlet inside Kandahar Airport.

Tim Horton's has an outlet inside Kandahar Airport. Continental Guest House very nice place in center of city. Has air conditioning and Internet access in the rooms. Good food is available in the restaurant. Rates are $55 per night. Tel. +93 303001924. Kandahar is not ready for tourists yet. If you must visit (usually this will be working for an NGO) follow the security advice and keep a low profile. Suicide bombers are likely to be looking for soft targets.
