Bhutan: Tourist Health And Safety Guide

By news desk on November 20,2007

Medical facilities in Bhutan are limited. Some medicine is in short supply. Thimphu has a military hospital; other major towns have small dispensaries, which offer basic health services. Also located in Thimphu are the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital and Royal Institute of Health Sciences (RIHS). Phuntsholing and Paro have general hospitals. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services. Please check with your insurance company to confirm whether payment will be made directly to the hospital or doctor or whether you will be reimbursed later for expenses that you will incur. Serious medical problems requiring hospitalization and/or medical evacuation can be very expensive.
