Just 40 km from the capital is the old capital of Cambodia, Oudong. Built on a hilltop, very little remains intact of the canals, terraces, bridges and over 100 pagodas created by King Ang Doung. Oudong is still frequented by Khmers who go to pay homage to the remains of former kings. It is a pleasant half-day trip into the Cambodian countryside away from the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh.
Tonle Bati: Not far south of Phnom Penh is a 12th century temple, Ta Proum, built by Jayavarman VII. Close to Tonle Bati is a small lake with a beach and food stalls that make it a popular picnic venue for Phnom Penh residents looking for a city getaway.
A little way down the road is Phnom Chisor, a fine Ankgor -era temple perched on a hilltop with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Phnom Chisor built by Suryavarman I and ithe rtemples inner sanctum houses the Neag Khmao, a 300-year-old statue of Buddha for some reason called the Black Lady.
