One advantage of Penang is that it is quite small, and it’s easy to get around the island. If you’re staying in Georgetown, for instance, most of the sights to see are either within the city, or very close to it. Some of these places are:
The Botanical Gardens, eight km from the city, are spread over 30 hectares, and are home to a large number of macaque monkeys; the gardens are usually full of flowers and have a lovely waterfall. They’re ideal for cycling, walks and picnics.
Situated at Teluk Bahang, 20 km from Georgetown, the Butterfly Farm has landscaped gardens, manmade islands and lots of flowers. It has about 5000 butterflies- around 100 species of butterflies and insects.
Batu Macang is a quaint fishing village on the southeastern tip of Penang. The village has a shrine with a footprint ascribed to an ancient admiral of the Ming dynasty, and is believed to bring good fortune to those who worship there. The hills overlooking the village have a maze of labyrinths containing relics of World War II.
