Bangkok is almost universally acknowledged as the `shopping hub’ of Thailand, although Chiang Mai is fast coming up as a good place to buy handicrafts. Chiang Mai, however, is still quite far from competing with Bangkok when it comes to the vast range of products on sale. Bangkok is the place to buy everything that Thailand is famous for- jewellery and gemstones, Thai silks and cottons, readymade garments, silverware, nielloware, basketry, ceramics and other traditional arts and crafts.
Major shopping districts in Bangkok include the area along Silom Road and Suriwongse Road, where clothing, leather goods and antique shops abound; the Pahurat Cloth Market, which is an excellent place for good but cheap fabric; and Chinatown, for jewellery. There are lots of slick department stores and shopping complexes too, where you can get almost anything you want. For the `bazaar buffs’- and people who aren’t scared of noisy crowds, the Chatuchak Weekend Market is a boon- it’s held on Saturdays and Sundays, and is the place to buy virtually anything made or grown in Thailand.
Remember one thing while shopping in Bangkok: Bargain all you can (you’re expected to), but don’t lose your cool- the Thai consider a display of anger as a sign of boorishness.
