Hoi An is a port city on the Thu Bon River just 34 km away from Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a pleasant getaway and an interesting one too. Hoi An was once a thriving port in the 17th and 18th centuries. A major centre for sericulture, the fame of its textile industry spread far and wide, making it a favourite port of call for trading vessels from Holland, Portugal, India, China and Japan.
The Ngoc Son Temple or the Jade Mountain Temple was built in the 18th century on an island in the Hoan Kiem Lake. It can be reached via a wooden bridge called The Huc – the bridge of the Rising Sun. The temple is dedicated to the scholar Van Xuong and Gen Tran Hung Dao.
A boat trip down the Saigon River and its auxiliary canals from the Passenger Quay at the end of Ham Nghi on Ton Duc Thang also makes for an interesting outing.
