Trinidad is the bigger and more prosperous of the two islands. The Capital of the two islands, Port of Spain, is situated on this island. Congested and hectic, vibrant and rich, Port of Spain has plenty to offer the tourist. Not as commercially active as Trinidad, Tobago is a beautiful island that makes it perfect for those who want to get away from it all. Scarborough that despite its natural beauty, does not attract many visitors. It is the southwestern coast of the island where tourism is concentrated. The island is short on sights other than the occasional fort ruins and tiny but picturesque villages along the coast. So all you need to do here is relax on that beach and acquire that suntan you’ve come for. An interesting village to visit is Bucco, the goat-racing centre of the world. If that sounds bizarre to you, visit the village during Easter when the annual goat-racing contest takes place. If you miss the event, look out for the scoreboard that is posted through the year. At any other time, Bucco is the typical Caribbean fishing village learning to embrace the invasion of tourists who want to admire its spectacular marine life. Beaches Trinidad: Snuggled against craggy, green hills, the palm-lined beaches along the northern coast are the some of best on the island. The turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean curl onto soft sand, making the coast a popular retreat. Maqueripe Bay, Maracas Bay, Tyrico Bay, Las Cuevas, Blanchisseuse Beach and the north east coast are beaches frequented by sun – worshippers especially during the weekends. Most beaches are equipped with changing rooms, showers and lifeguards. Be careful of undercurrents in the waters and mosquitoes and sand flies that flit around on most beaches. The rougher waters of the Atlantic are not ideal for a leisurely swim but the sandy beaches peppered with tall palms are perfect for relaxation. Mayaro Bay and Manzanilla Bay wash over some lovely beaches. The southwestern coast also has picturesque beaches but it’s difficult to get to them. Tobago: Picture postcard beaches line the southwestern coast of Tobago. Their beauty attracts a number of tourist, locals as well as opportunistic vendors so if you’re looking for privacy, you’ll have to head for some of the other beaches. Store bay, Pigeon Point, Stone haven Bay, Mount Irvine Bay, Speyside Beach, Courland Bay are some of the popular beaches on the island. Most of the beaches have changing rooms, shower facilities as well as lifeguards. The Nylon Pool near the Bucco reef is a pool of calm waters perfect for swimming. The east coast is rugged swept by strong winds and often, strong surf and is not safe for swimming. Rip tides in Hillsborough Bay (near Scarborough) make the waters dangerous for a swim.
