Sanitation levels in some areas are not up to the mark. Water – borne diseases are common.  Never drink tap water and always ask for purified water in restaurants. Also be careful of where you eat as unsanitary handling of food can result in serious health hazards. It’s advisable to get a shot against hepatitis A and B before visiting the country. Insect – borne diseases are just as common and personal protection against mosquitoes is very important. Malaria and dengue fever are common.

Major cities like Tegus and San Pedro are equipped with adequate medical facilities but rural areas are not equipped to handle serious health concerns.

Incidences of violent crime are on the rise especially in the big cities of Tegucigalpa and San Pedro as well as well as along the North Coast. Hold on to your bags and wallets as pick pocketing and bag – snatching are not uncommon. Kidnapping for profit is on the rise, so don’t walk around alone especially at night. Women travellers should always keep this in mind and travelling alone even during the day is not advisable.
