Bahrain has many excellent museums and interesting archaeological sites. The capital city Manama houses most of the interesting sights - the National Museum where you can trace the history of Bahrain from the Stone Age (5000-3200 BC); the Heritage Centre; Oil Museum; Beit Al-Quran (Koran House) where you can see the Islamic calligraphy dating from 7th century. Not far from Manama is Suq Al-Khamis Mosque, the oldest mosque in Bahrain; the excavations at Qal’at Al-Bahrain; Barbar Temple built in the 2nd and 3rd millenniums BC; the A’ali Burial mounds among the most impressive of Bahrain’s 85,000 remaining burial mounds or tumuli; Qal’at Aby Mahir (fort); Rashid Al- Oraifi Museum, established in 1994.If you are a wildlife enthusiast take a trip to Al-‘Areen Wildlife Sanctuary that has the Arabian Oryx, an animal similar to the mythical unicorn. |
