The only way to describe this city is to recognise Luxor is as an open-air museum! You'll be hard pressed to choose between all the sights, so it's ideal to set aside three to four days for Luxor. The Luxor Temple, The Karnak Temple Complex, the Luxor Museum, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon and the Ramesseum, Deir Al Medina and so many more. The Nile weaves its way along the outskirts of the city and a cruise down the river is one you'll never forget. The souks (marketplaces) in Luxor pulsate with life and have the best bargains for souvenir hunters. Buy the papyrus, the carpets, the cottons, the miniatures of pyramids and statuettes here rather than Cairo, which tends to be expensive. If you are short on time, the national carrier has regular flights between Luxor and Cairo. Alternatively, take an air-conditioned bus to Luxor from Cairo on any of the bus lines that operate throughout Egypt: East Delta, West Delta or Super Jet. There are deluxe sleeper trains that operate on the Cairo-Luxor-Aswan route as well. |
