Thick soups are the main items on the menu of Ghanaians. They are usually eaten with potatoes or rice. Another well-loved meal is "Fu-Fu", made of cassava, yam or plantain that has been cooked, pureed and mashed into a ball. "Fu-Fu" can be topped with a fiery sauce or served as an accompaniment to a main dish. A popular dessert is fried plantain seasoned with chilli, pepper and ginger. This is usually washed down with a non-alcoholic drink made of corn called "askenkee". Ceremonial occasions demand the serving of "oto" always accompanied by hard-boiled eggs. For official ceremonial parties, oto is made without onions or tomatoes. Ghana’s most famous food is of course, cocoa, for which it is well known. It is Ghana’s major export earner and is an essential ingredient to making chocolate.
