Domestic flight connections are available between the Roland-Garros airport in the north and Saint-Pierre Pierrefonds airport in the south. Private operators offer charter helicopter and plane rides over the island.

By Road

Travelling around the island is best by road as the roads are excellent and efficient bus services network the entire island of Réunion. The buses are virtual lifelines of the public transport system as there are no trains on the island. The bus service is of two kinds – the first is an urban service operating mainly in Saint-Denis, the other is the fleet of yellow buses or ‘car jaune’ that connects the main towns. The buses are comfortable and service is both regular and frequent. Taxis are available at the taxi stands in the city centres and at the airport; cabs can also be hired by phone. Taxis can also be hired for long distance travel between towns. Cab charges tend to go up on holidays and after 10pm at night. Shared taxi services run on the lines of mini buses are a cheaper alternative, as cab fares can be steep.There are numerous car rental companies on Réunion and hiring private transport makes practical sense as the roads are very well maintained. A French or international driving license is required, though not mandatory. More energetic travellers can hire motorcycles, bicycles and mountain bikes.
