Most cities and larger towns in the Czech Republic have a fair number of eating places- cafés, restaurants, salad-and-sandwich shops, and pubs galore - the country is known for its beer- Pilsner is the most famous type. In smaller towns, you’re unlikely to find much variety- the usual Czech fare of pork or beef, dumplings, sauerkraut, and beer is probably the most you’ll be able to get- but at least it’s enough to keep body and soul together. In larger towns and cities, and especially in Prague, there’s much more choice. The capital is particularly rich in food & beverage outlets, ranging from American-style snack counters to fancy French restaurants; between the two are a whole range of cuisines, encompassing everything from Chinese and Indian to German and Italian. For those who want to stay on familiar territory, there are about a dozen American style fast food outlets in Prague alone. The Czech Republic, and especially Prague, is a good place to go if you’re particular about being entertained. The capital, in particular, offers a wide range of choices for recreation. There are museums, art galleries and monuments galore, so you can spend your entire day trudging from one attraction to the next. Come night, and the city’s vibrant nightlife gets going- discotheques, nightclubs, restaurants, and bars aplenty. In addition, Prague has a number of venues where performances are regularly held, of everything from chamber music and ballet to hard rock, jazz, and theatre (after all, the country lists among its sons such illustrious names as the composer Antonin Dvorak, the jazz musician Jan Hammer, and the writer Franz Kafka- hardly surprising, then that the cultural scene is pretty lively). Keep a watch on the daily listings in newspapers if you’re interested in attending any concerts or shows. Outside Prague, things may be a little less lively, but there’s usually something or the other happening. A lot of smaller towns and villages have very good traditional entertainment; the region of Moravske Slovacko, is, for instance, known for its festivals, where the singing, dancing and music are really good. |
