Most people visiting Belarus are still edgy about Chernobyl and it’s aftermath. The concern is not out of place if you consider that the reactor is just 12kms south of the Belarussian border and that winds blew the noxious materials in the northerly direction for six days after the explosion. But remember that was 14 years ago. Today an area of about 1200 sq. km north of Chernobyl stands evacuated completely. Experts opine that it is safe to travel in areas that were once contaminated and a week’s stay there is no worse than receiving an X-ray. Still to play it safe you can avoid purchasing cheap local dairy products, German or Dutch products are an easily available option.
