Restaurants in cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow make some sumptuous meals out of the country game. Beef, venison, lamb and deer are cooked along with hearty helpings of fresh vegetables. Other legendary Scottish meals include porridge, shortbread, haggis - delectable mix of chopped lungs, heart and liver mixed with oatmeal and boiled in a sheep's stomach, and Scotch broth. If you have the stomach for it go ahead, try it! But you don’t necessarily have to eat “Scottish” while in Scotland. Most cities and towns usually have the regular range of international cuisine such as Chinese, Thai and Indian to give you a taste of something different. From kebabs to satay to “spud”-filled tuna, you certainly have a choice before you. A budget meal can be had for 4 to 8 pounds, and a moderate restaurant lunch or dinner for something like 15 pounds. Scotland isn’t exactly the cheapest country in the United Kingdom, but it’s a good deal better than England. After a good hearty meal, give the nightlife and entertainment events of Scottish cities a try. Edinburgh’s world famous International Festival is a three week extravaganza full of music, dance, theatre and film performances and events. This is the truly the most happening place and time in Scotland, and you will never have a day or evening without a zillion options. . In Edinburgh, apart from the regular pubs and bars, allow yourself some off beat and refreshing entertainment at joints like the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, which are a celebration of martial arts and music (talk about unsavory combinations…), set on the beautiful Castle Esplanade. In Glasgow you can go bar hopping at the bustling Sauchiehall Street Center at night and try some out of the 100 varieties of malts and scotch whiskeys. |
