Perth is one of the most isolated state capitals in the world. Located in the south west area region of the vast state of Western Australia, with 1.3 million residents, it contains around 70% of that state's population.
It's true that the city centre's skyscrapers dominate a picturesque riverside location. But behind the towering edifices hide a handful of 19th-century buildings and facades, and some saving-grace patches of greenery. But these concerns fade in an instant when you glimpse the famous beaches. Perth, one of the most isolated cities in the world, has all modern conveniences and is a stunning place for a summer or winter holiday. With the sun always shining, white sandy beaches and a cosmopolitan atmosphere there is always something to see and do in Perth , Western Australia. The Avon Valley is home to a spectacular variety of water fowl and hold a spectacular white water race - The Avon Descent in August. North of Perth the coastline boasts some of the most popular recreation areas in Western Australia with excellent snorkelling, fishing and surfing
History British settlers established a free settler colony in 1829 as part of the Swan River Colony. From 1850, an influx of convicts boosted the size of the colony and their labour helped shape the early architecture of the city. The discovery of gold in the 1890's triggered a boom which, with subsequent mineral discoveries, has been key to the city's economy. As capital of the state Western Australia, Perth joined the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Climate
