English and Chinese are the two officially recognised languages in Hong Kong used in administration, business and as the universal medium of education. English continues to be the language of choice for its universality, particularly in the sphere of international business. Cantonese (Chinese) is the predominant dialect spoken by most immigrants from the Chinese Mainland because most of them had originally come from the neighbouring province of Guangdong. Even the other races living in Hong Kong, such as the Sikhs and Hindus speak Cantonese fluently. All road signs and sign posting is bilingual – in both English and Cantonese. Putonghua (Mandarin) is the official language of China and its use is becoming widespread in Hong Kong particularly in bureaucratic and judicial circles, after Hong Kong's reversion to Chinese control. |
