The Oryuk Islands off the coast of Gwangalli are a curious chain of six islets with strange cliffs. Once upon a time they were connected to the Korean Peninsula, according to geologists, and are one of the oldest sea terraces in the Busan Bay. Popular with angling enthusiasts, the Islets are said to have inspired many a Korean muse. The Beomeousa Temple is the main shrine of the region, now a rich cultural archive. The main hall (Daeunjeong) is often called the treasure hall. The roof is elegantly built and a tall Buddha statue adorns the centre. There is a lot more to see in this temple complex - the three-storey pagoda (Samcheung Seoktap) built in the 9 th century, an eight angled stone pillar (Seokju Gidung) made at the same time and a single-pillar structure with a two-layered roof (Iljumun). The largest fortress in Korea is right here in Busan. Located in Mt Geomjeong it is flanked by four gates and has four observation platforms. It stretches across 17, 337 in length and stands 3m tall. If you do not wish to go around the entire fort, don’t miss the villa for the magistrate and the views from the observation towers. Chungleyol Temple has historical significance and is the locale of a solemn Confucian Festival held every year on May 25. The UN Memorial Park, looked after by them, is in the memory of the soldiers who gave up their lives in the Korean War (1950-53). Extremely well kept and verdant all year around, it is decorated with flags of 21 allied nations who took part in the War. It also has pillars for the 16 nations who fought actively. There are 200 kinds of trees in Taejongdae, centred on a 250km peak. Seashore pine, silver magnolia, camellia and many others line the silver-seashore stretching across 9.1 km. The estuary of Nakdong River is a must visit for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. Warning: Hold your breath if you don’t appreciate the smell of raw fish, especially when you are passing by the bustling fish markets at Chalgachi and Gukje.
