There are a few places, within such distance of Kuala Lumpur, that they can comprise a day’s visit.

Around 2 hours’ drive from the city, Fraser’s Hill is known for its beauty- waterfalls, fields of flowers and lots of greenery. Horse-riding, golf and children’s play facilities make it a popular weekend destination.

Genting Highlands, a mountain resort in the hills overlooking Kuala Lumpur, is a perfect getaway for there is little to do here except go for walks, enjoy the clean mountain air and generally unwind.

Klang, 20 odd km from Kuala Lumpur, lies in the state of Selangor and has a history behind it; it was, at one time, the main centre of the tin trade and had become the bone of contention in the Civil War of the 1870s. Today, Klang has an interesting museum and is a good day’s trip for those interested in history.

13 km north of Kuala Lumpur are the Batu Caves- huge, spectacular limestone caves with stalactites, hanging ferns and tropical flowers. Not just a beautiful place, but also historical - anti-Japanese Communist guerillas sheltered here during World War II. The caves also shelter a Hindu temple that attracts over a million pilgrims each January during the festival of Thaipusam.

11 km from Batu Caves are more forests, natural and manmade. Templer Park and the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia spread across 1500 hectares of tropical forests teeming with plants, animals and birds. It’s a great place for treks and a bit of time in the wide-open spaces.

Just about one hours' driving time from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor River is the place for white water rafting aficionados. If you happen to be in the area any time between November and June, check this place for either rafting or kayaking.

Other places of interest include the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory, (10 km from Kuala Lumpur), and the little town of Kajang, 26 km south of Kuala Lumpur, reputed to make the best satay sauce in Malaysia.
